Trees

 Wednesday

We left Albany this morning and travelled to Denmark about 60 klms away. Denmark was a beautiful little town and once you started walking around you could see there was a lot more to it than what you see from the main road.  There were lots of eateries, health stores, fashion stores and interesting food stores. There was even a department store.

After buying some organic lamb chops for tea we had lunch in a park down by the river.

We then continued west and found an excellent campground called the Valley of the Giants Eco Park. This was like a bush camp but with facilities.

The next day we went to the Valley of the Giants Tree Walk and surface walk. What an education. We learnt about the Tingle trees, 2 varieties, one red and one yellow. Both trees grow to a huge height but the red one had only surface roots and will not survive if the ground around their base is compressed. Hence the construction of an aerial Steele walkway through the tops of the trees. It was just fabulous.

Beginning the climb upwards.
A new maintenance worker being instructed on how to lower herself off the platform.
A view from the top looking down.

A view of the walkway through the tree tops.

We then did the Ancient Forrest walk on the Forest floor . That is when you get a really good idea of how tall these trees are. It is impossible to get a photo of the whole tree.

The red tingle tree gets hollowed out at the bottom by fungi and fire to the point that you can fit inside the base. They do not fall over if the ground around them is not disturbed.

You can walk through the middle of this one.

This is the bottom of a Tingle tree when it has fallen over.

We then drove to a different site to see the Giant Tingle Tree.

This tree has a 24 metre circumference

We had lunch at Walpole and then drove to Pemberton to see the Gloucester Tree. This is a giant tree that Bob climbed in1968 but it is  now closed as they are trying to figure out how to make it safer.

You can see how safe it is, not.

We then drove on and found a farm stay at the Nannup Lavender Farm.
