The Great Central Road.

 Saturday 17/5/25. Day One.

After stocking up on food we left Laverton travelling east. The first 60 klms were bitumen and then really well graded dirt. We thought this is pretty good and then we hit the corrugations and  they were pretty bad. We ended up travelling on the wrong side of the road to get a better ride. Even the road trains were doing this so you know it is a bad road.

We stopped at a look out  and found fantastic views of the Giles Breakaway.

Corrugated road.
A good section of road.

A breakaway is an outcrop of rocky hills in the middle of a plain often with caves and gnamma holes containing water.

Next stop was a place called White Cross which is where some local Christian aborigines erected a cross on a break away.

Dry gnamma holes.

303 klms from Laverton we stopped at the Tjukayrla Roadhouse.

This was the only roadhouse that let you take pictures, as all the others said no photos.

Next stop was the Desert Breakaway and Gnamma Hole. This place would have been a great camp spot but it was too early to camp so we had our lunch there instead.
We explored along the lower edge looking for caves and then we climbed to the top for great views of the area.

We drove on and found a campsite in an old gravel pit about 10 KLMs from the Warburton Roadhouse.
