Esperance to Albany via Wave Rock.
Saturday 26/4/25.
We headed out of town towards Ravensthorpe and then turned north towards Wave Rock. We found a free camp at Holt Rock about 60 klms from Wave rock. Holt rock is used as another water catchment with walls being built to channel water run off from the rock into some tanks.
Large water pipes covered with rocksRock walls built around the top of the rock to catch the rain water and redirect it into the tanks via the grate in the next picture.
Our first bush camp where we were able to have a camp fire to cook our dinner.
Sunday 27/4/25.
We were on the road pretty early and arrived in the Wave Rock area about 9.45. First stop was Hippo’s Yawn. This is a rock formation that is wearing away from underneath. It will take many thousands of years for this to happen.
From a distance.Up close.
We then drove to the main car park and explored many of the tracks on and around Wave Rock.
This rock has also been walled around the top to redirect rain water but into this dam not into tanks. This was the local town, Hayden’s water supply but now it is mostly for stock or the Golf Course .
These are water holes on the top called gnamma by the local indigenous people who used them for drinking water.
This is a view from the top of the rock. In the distance you can see some lakes. These lakes are the result of all the trees being cleared and the water rising to the surface. They are salty so the water cannot be used for farming.
After lunch we drove 16klms further north to Mulka’s Cave. The indigenous people believed the cave was haunted by Mulka the son born when two people of the wrong skin group got together. He became violent, committed some grisly murders and consequently came to a very bad end.
The are many hand prints in the cave but it is hard to get
We then went on an indigenous food trail and almost got lost as the path wasn’t clear. Our Explore Oz map got us out of trouble.
After having a look at the lace shop which had the most amazing pieces of all types of lace, wedding dresses and doylies we had a Quick Look at Hyden and then headed south towards Albany. We found a lovely bush camp on the side of the road and had another campfire dinner.
The next morning we drove on to Albany.
