Alice Springs.

 Thursday 22/5/25.

This morning was clean up and jobs day. We did the washing and then Bob and Keith went and sorted out tyres. Bob bought 2 new tyres and had them fitted on the back. 

He then was notified of a dentist appointment after someone cancelled so the rest of us had a look around town while Bob went off and had a root canal done. It wasn’t a very cheap day!!

Whilst we were in the Todd Mall we checked out the Flynn Uniting Church where we were married.



We then walked around town looking at various places of interest.

We then checked out Nathalie Gorey Preschool and Ida Standley Preschool where Barb had worked in the early 70s. Nathalie Gorey Preschool is now the senior citizens centre and the Preschool has been moved to east side.

In the evening we all went to the Gillen Club for dinner and were met there by Kate Dobie and her daughter Charli. We had a really good catch up.

Friday23/5/25.

This morning we had a slow start and then we did some shopping. Keith, Rhonda and Alan went for a trip out to Trephina Gorge etc. We went out to see the speedway but didn’t get to see much as it was all locked up.



We then visited the Telegraph Station. We only looked at the outside as you now have to pay admission and we have been there many times before. We ended up having lunch down by the river before the flies nearly carried us off and we adjourned to the cafe for coffee.

Saturday  24/5/25.
We said goodbye to Rhonda, Keith and Alan as they left to drive back to Brisbane.
We checked out of the caravan park and drove out to Ilparpa to stay with friends Alison and Jim. They took us for a drive to Standley Chasm where we had afternoon tea.

On our return we had happy hour watching the colours of the rocks change as the sun went down.

Sunday 25/5/25
The next morning we went to The Alice Springs Garden Cemetery to visit the graves of some recently departed friends.
Then we visited Suellen whose mother and I worked together in 1972/3 and had a delicious lamb roast lunch. We caught up on lots of local news which was great.
We spent the evening back with Alison and Jim and really enjoyed the peaceful rural atmosphere on their property.

Monday 26/5/25.
We left Alison and Jim’s and went back into town to do some shopping etc.
We drove past the telephone exchange where Bob used to work. It has changed a lot in 50years,,



This is the old PO masters residence and we had our wedding reception in the back garden. There is no garden there now.









We had a relaxing afternoon back at the caravan park we had stayed in the first few days we were in Alice. At 4 pm Kate picked us up and we went back to her place for afternoon tea. Her son Lachlan and his girlfriend came over to see us too. It was lovely to see him after a very long time. A great way to end another lovely day. We have really enjoyed our stay here.

Mudgee to Beechworth.

Tuesday - 18/3/25 Overnight we stayed with Barb’s friend Dot at her small acreage at Budgee Budgee about 10 klms from Mudgee. We had another early morning visitor. Andrew (peacock) Dot and Barb have been friends since year one! We left Mudgee this morning after having a look around the town. We also went past the farm where Barb grew up and also checked out the house in Lawson St where her parents moved to after selling the farm. We drove to Bathurst via Sofala where we had lunch. Then we continued down the Olympic way through Blayney, Cowra, Young and stopped for the night in the Wallendbeen recreation reserve for the night. The trucks were loud on the highway but we didn’t hear them as we were pretty tired. In the morning we packed up and travelled to Henty for lunch and arrived in Beechworth about 3.30pm.  We had a lovely evening with our friend Nick Henry, treating ourselves to a pub dinner. It was a beautiful barmy evening. Next stop Riddells Creek.

Our Trip Plan.

  Friday 14th March 2025. Packing the camper. Our plan is to  - drive to Victoria to see family and then attend a reunion with all our Alice Springs Friends.  - drive to South Australia to visit Bob’s family and see more friends. - drive across the Nullarbor and around the coast to Perth. - drive to Geraldton and then east to Laverton where we will meet up with our travel companions, Rhonda and Keith Brett . - drive to Uluṟu via The Great Central Road. - drive to Boulia via Alice Springs and the Plenty Highway. - drive home to Brisbane. Sounds ambitious? Yes it is and who knows whether we can do all of this but that is what makes it an adventure! We have been preparing for this trip for a while but it didn’t help having to pack up for a cyclone and then unpack afterwards. Still we didn’t have any damage so we need to be thankful for that.

Wallabadah.

  Sunday- 16/3/25. This morning we had an unexpected visitor as we were packing up to leave camp. This morning we continued on our drive down the New England Highway. We stopped in Guyra for morning tea and almost opposite the park was the Guyra Motor Museum. So in we went. There was quite a range of cars from a Cadillac to a Volkswagen Beetle, Holdens, Toranas and Valiant Chargers just to name a few. Some were in excellent condition and others were works in progress. Unfortunately we both forgot to take some photos. After lunch we drove on, stopping in Bendemeer for lunch and arriving in Wallabadah at about 3.30 ish. This is the third time we have stopped here for the night as it is a short run the next day through to Mudgee. We always camp down near the creek on lovely green grass. Nearby is a memorial to all the people who arrived on the first fleet. Each ship has its own section with the names of those on board.. There is a picnic area under shade sails.
