WA Border to Cocklebiddy.

 Sunday 20/4/25

After crossing the border it was only a short drive to Eucla. Bob looked for the pub he visited in 1968 but of course it had been replaced by a new motel/ hotel.

We did find the old hotel sign.

A couple of signs that were close by.

We then drove down to see the old Eucla telegraph station. There is not much left and the sand and the vandals have had a field day. Much of the building was taken away to be reused for buildings in other locations.

This is a good view.

After Eucla we continued driving west, stopping in the Madura Caravan Park for the night. It was raining and as we were by ourself we didn’t want to get bogged in a free camp. The next morning, the rain had eased a little and we drove to the Eyre Bird Observatory. This involved 20 klms on a muddy dirt road to the top of an escarpment. There we let the tyres down to 30 pounds and then we proceeded down a very steep slope till we arrived at a two wheel sandy track and eventually arrived at the observatory 12 klms later.

The caretaker lives in the old Eyre Telegraph Station where you a stay overnight in the guest rooms if you wish.

It was hard to get a clear photo of the building as there were a lot of trees and shrubs around it.

Unfortunately as it was spitting with rain the birds were not out and about as much as normal but we heard lots of them as we did the rope walk.

We also walked down to the beach but it was blowing a gale and we only stayed a few minutes.

What’s left of the original building made out of tin!! Can you imagine the heat in summer and the cold in winter.

A sandblow on our walk.

A muddy section of the dirt road.
A good section of the sandy track. I couldn’t get a photo of a not so good section as I had to hang on to the Jesus bar to stop getting thrown about. Bob was driving so he had the steering wheel to hang on to.

Back at the bitumen Bob pumped up the tyres in the rain and then we drove to Cocklebiddy Roadhouse to camp for the night.

The old roadhouse that was probably there in 1968 when Bob came through in the mini.

A couple of locals.
